The opportunity:
This role owns the controllership and financial reporting engine of a business that collects fees from thousands of students across 20+ campuses and settles revenue with university partners under collaboration agreements. It is a high-ownership seat: you will report directly to the CFO, hold the statutory and control agenda end-to-end, and lead a team of four.
What makes this role distinctive. Virohan's finance function is deliberately lean and supported by established outsourced partners for transaction processing, GST and TDS. This role is therefore designed as an owner of the control framework and a manager of providers — not a preparer of entries. You will spend your time on judgement, controls, audit and reporting quality rather than on volume processing. You will also have direct exposure to the Board, investors and lenders through the CFO.

Role purpose:
To own statutory accounting, the monthly close, audit, taxation, compliance and the control environment for Virohan — producing reporting the Board, investors, lenders and auditors can rely on, and building the control maturity appropriate to a company moving through Series C and beyond.

Key responsibilities:
1. Financial Close & Reporting
  • Own monthly, quarterly and annual financial close, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
  • Lead statutory financial statements, provisions, reconciliations, revenue recognition and accounting accuracy.
  • Prepare MIS and lender/investor reporting in partnership with the CFO.
2. Internal Controls, Risk & Governance
  • Design and own the internal control framework across P2P, O2C, payroll, treasury and reporting.
  • Establish segregation of duties, approval matrices, maker-checker controls and risk mitigation mechanisms.
  • Own IFC/ICFR, statutory audits, related-party reporting and closure of audit observations.
  • Support fundraising diligence and maintain robust finance documentation and control testing.
3. Taxation & Compliance
  • Own GST, TDS, RCM, 15CA/CB and other direct/indirect tax compliance.
  • Manage tax notices, statutory filings and compliance calendars with zero-default accountability.
  • Review tax-related clauses in partner and vendor contracts.
4. Payroll & Labour Compliance
  • Own end-to-end payroll finance, including validation, disbursement, reconciliation and accounting.
  • Ensure compliance with PF, ESIC, PT, LWF, gratuity, TDS and applicable labour laws across locations.
  • Strengthen payroll controls and partner with HR on payroll policies and statutory changes.
5. Accounts Receivable & Collections
  • Own student fee receivables, ageing, collections and cash conversion across campuses.
  • Lead university partner settlements, reconciliations and dispute resolution.
  • Oversee revenue accruals, discounts, refunds, scholarships and dropout accounting.
  • Drive DSO reduction and strengthen controls around collections and reconciliations.
6. Accounts Payable & Vendor Management
  • Own the end-to-end procure-to-pay cycle, including vendor onboarding, invoice processing, payments and reconciliations.
  • Ensure vendor master integrity, approval controls, TDS/GST compliance and timely provisioning.
  • Manage fixed assets and drive payment discipline and working capital efficiency.
7. Treasury & Cash Management
  • Own treasury operations, banking relationships and daily bank reconciliations.
  • Drive cash-flow forecasting, liquidity visibility and banking/payment controls.
  • Support lender and covenant reporting.
8. Team & Finance Operations
  • Lead and develop a team of four across AP, AR & Collections and Controllership.
  • Manage outsourced accounting, tax, payroll and audit partners.
  • Own finance systems including Zoho Books, Zoho Analytics and Keka.
  • Standardise processes and build a scalable, well-documented finance function.

Essential:
  • Chartered Accountant with 7–12 years of post-qualification experience.
  • Has personally run a monthly close within the last three years — this is a hands-on leadership. role, not a purely supervisory one Has owned a statutory audit end-to-end as the company-side lead.
  • Strong working command of Indian GAAP, GST, TDS and Companies Act compliance
  • Has designed or substantially rebuilt an internal control framework — not merely operated within one someone else built.
  • Working knowledge of payroll statutory compliance (PF, ESIC, PT, gratuity) and Indian labour law as it applies to a multi-state workforce.
  • Experience managing outsourced finance or tax providers
  • Has managed a team of three or more.
  • Comfortable operating with limited structure and building process where none exists.
